Candy Making: Chocolate, Caramel & More
As with many holidays, Halloween is an occasion celebrated with candy. Hordes of prowling kids take to the streets hunting door to door through the cold evening in pursuit of the next sweet fix. And yet, like many foods, commercialism has gotten the better of us, and we have let massive corporations take the fun of candy making out of our hands and onto store shelves. We have lost the recipes of earlier generations for the sake of convenient bags of industrially manufactured, chemically enhanced sugar covered in cardboard flavored chocolate. But it wasn’t always this way; parents used to treat children to homemade sweets that were fun for kids of all ages. Join us as we learn a few old candy recipes that will make your holiday season something special! We’ll learn how to cook chocolate caramels, candied fruits, gummies, and even candy bars with crunchy filling! This Halloween don’t be haunted by leftover plastic bags full of metallically-sweet artificial additives. Use your cooking tricks to share a real treat with your visitors this season. You’ll be so delighted with the results you may even be tempted to keep them for yourself!This is a participatory cooking class. A small group of 3-4 students will work together at each cooking station to complete the recipes on the night's menu."Jacob is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and good with cooks of all skill levels. Crafting a Charcuterie Board from Repurposed Woods
Join us for a delightful 2-session woodworking experience as we delve into the enchanting world of charcuterie board-making which will become a treasured keepsake, or gift, and topic of discussion! If you are news to woodworking, we recommend you take the Introduction to Woodworking and Shop Tools Workshop on Oct 9th to get comfortable using the tools prior to taking this course. In this hands-on class, you will learn the art of creating visually stunning and unique charcuterie boards that will impress your guests on any occasion. During the workshop, students will choose from a wide variety of new and repurposed fine woods to create a visually stunning piece that can last a lifetime. Prepared woods may include Maple, Ash, Purple Heart, Walnut, Birch, Australian Eucalyptus, Brazilian Cherry, Oak, Coconut Wood, Ipe, and others. All materials are included in the fee for this course. Students will decide on the design they wish to use and choose their woods. Since the wood will be of various thicknesses, students will need to plane them to an equal thickness and then glue and clamp the wood to form the board. Tools used: mitre saw, table saw, planer, and clamps.For the second class, students will sand or plane their glued boards to get a uniform smooth surface. They will then draw and cut their handle design on the board. Tools used: planer, sander, band saw, scroll saw. Lastly, all boards will be sanded, thoroughly cleaned and coated with food-grade oils to penetrate and seal the boards. Extra oil will be given to each student to repeat this process at home. Tools used: Sander.Note: The electric tool usage can create a bottleneck in the shop, so please be patient and use this time to learn and help others during class time. Please bring safety glasses and a dust mask if you have one. We have a small supply on hand. Supporting GERD + Heartburn with Functional Nutrition - ONLINE

Surface Embroidery: Moving Beyond the Basic Stitches
ARTS & CRAFTS
In this 4-week course, students will learn a variety of advanced surface embroidery stitches including chain, blanket, herringbone, fly and feather stitches. These stitches form linear designs, add texture, and are useful when seam embellishments are desired on crazy quilts or clothing. Classes are designed to allow for individualized instruction as well as time to practice and refine stitching techniques. This course is appropriate for stitchers of every age, who have developed basic needle skills and are comfortable creating cross, stem, lazy daisy, and running surface embroidery stitches. Students should bring a 7-inch (or smaller) embroidery hoop and scissors to class. All other materials will be provided.

Therapeutic Massage Techniques for Managing Stress & Postural Work Habits

Have you always wanted to know how to best give a therapeutic massage to help someone reduce the effects of stress and common postural work habits? Join Kirsten, a certified massage therapist, to better understand the common causes and massage remedies to help manage symptoms of both the upper and lower extremities With hands-on practice and learned practical techniques you will begin to ease the tension in those areas using acupressure and traditional massage therapy. The first evening will focus on techniques for managing headaches, neck aches, weakness and numbness in the upper extremities. The second evening will focus on lower back, knees and wrists. You will receive both digital and paper handouts as well as a video to help you practice at home. Tool and Knife Sharpening- House and Garden Blades

In this demo-style class, Louis will offer basic instruction in the principles and techniques sharpening of various household tools. Items covered in this workshop are those that work well if their working edges are reworked with commonly available devices such as medium-grade files and bench stones. Using honing stones, files, strops, sharpening jigs and other devices commonly used in sharpening, these items will be restored to a reasonable fine taper and have their working parts reasonably cleaned, tightened, and well lubricated. Instructor sharpening up to max two-items is included in the fee. Items covered for this course are as follows: Ordinary Kitchen Knives Shop Tools Lawn Mower Blades Garden Tools Bring in one or two items that warrant sharpening and/or adjusting and learn how to start doing this at home with the right files and stones. NOTE: Sharpening tools/knifes such as carving knives, chisels, chef's knives, straight razors, dressmakers shears, hair-stylist scissors, etc. will be covered in the NEXT class- Part 2 on 4/16. Tool and Knife Sharpening- Precision and Performance

In this demo-style class, Louis will offer basic instruction in the principles and techniques sharpening of various tools, knives and scissors that require an extremely sharp edge to maintain the performance as if they are new. This type of sharpening requires a sophisticated approach to resharpening and honing that carefully controls the angles at which sharpening devices are set and progresses through a number os stages abrasiveness from course to ultra-fine. This process is dictated by an assessment oft he amount of sharpening that a particular tool needs based on it's purpose, condition, and quality of manufacturer. Instructor sharpening up to max two-items is included in the fee. Items covered for this course are as follows: Carving Knives and Chef's Knives Chisels Straight Razors Dressmakers Shears Hair-Stylist Scissors Bring in one or two items that warrant sharpening and/or adjusting and learn how to start doing this at home with the right files and stones. Tourtiere: Traditional French Canadian Meat Pie
COOKING & BAKING
Tourtière, a French Canadian meat pie dish originating from Quebec, is a meal that will keep you and your family and friends warm on a cold winter evening. Generally served around Christmas time, this meat pie is made with a various meats, vegetables, and spices. The filing is unique, but the crust is the "piece de resistance" with Adele’s tried and true "Hot Crust" method that yields a flaky pie crust that is delicious and simple to make. This is a perfect dish to make ahead and freeze for additional chilly nights. Adele will demonstrate her secret methods with the class, and then each student will get to sample the results before making their own small pie to take home and freeze or bake at your leisure! This is a participatory cooking class. A small group of 3-4 students will work together at each cooking station to complete the recipe on the night's menu. This class will meet inside CVU.

Turn a Wooden Pen!

Come learn the basics of pen turning with professional wood turner Andrew Duling. Pen turning is an excellent introduction to lathe work. It’s a quick, fulfilling, and inexpensive way to go from wood to finished product. Bring home a pen you can cherish for years or give as a gift. Each student will complete turning of one pen, with the option of turning an additional pen as time allows. Open to all ages 16+, students 12-16 welcome with an adult chaperone. All experience levels welcome! No prior woodworking experience required. All materials and use of equipment included in the fee. Bring safety eye goggles and wear closed toed shoes. Come learn the basics of turning and make a rolling pin with professional wood turner Andrew Duling. This is an excellent introduction to lathe work. Each student will complete turning of one rolling pin. Designs such as a tapered French or a handled rolling pin will be discussed at the start of class. Ukulele Skillbuilder (Level 2)

If you have taken Ukulele Level 1 and want to continue on your strumming journey then this is where your playing takes flight! In this fun class, we'll reinforce those basic ukulele chords and strums and explore fresh territory. We'll learn how to use strumming patterns to add texture to songs. We'll smooth out chord transitions and work on timing and other ways of bringing more musicality into your playing. Bring your questions and quandaries and we'll take 'em on! We'll practice jamming together so you'll be ready for the holidays. Ukes will be available for rent ($20 for 4 weeks) or for purchase at class. This class is for adults age 18+. Van Conversion Forum for Traveling, Camping and Building- By Donation

Travel in a van conversion is a low-cost and self-contained travel option that appeals to folks comfortable with and excited by the prospect of independent exploration. Whether staying at campgrounds or at “dispersed camping” areas, you can optimize your home-on-wheels to meet your own requirements. Over the course of 4-sessions, we will discuss and share ideas, methods, and experiences. This is great class for anyone interested in van conversions and/or has some experience and is looking for more. Which vehicle is best for conversion? How to plan for a space that will meet your particular needs? Why not buy an RV or a factory van conversion? This forum will take a methodical approach to discussion of needs, priorities, and limitations, including, but not limited to: The Big Tin Can: walls, ceilings, floors, insulation, noise suppression, ventilation. Electricity: solar panels, battery options, charger/inverters, DC/AC wiring, lighting, ventilation, heating. Sleeping: bed and bedding options. Storage: shelving, drawers, dedicated space for bicycles or other specific needs. Cooking: built-in or outside, refrigerator/coolers. Bathroom needs: the most-frequently asked question, no-contest. Camping: What options exist for staying in developed or dispersed areas? Visible Mending with Ande

This class will help you learn how to mend jeans, pants, shirts, bags, jersey t shirts, and more! Visible mending is great for tears, rips, stains, logos, etc. You will learn several visible mending techniques in this class including stitch patterning, applique, reverse applique, and paper piecing. This new series is a perfect chance to personalize your look and get creative! Some experience with hand sewing is helpful, but not necessary. If you can thread a needle, you can mend! This is a hand-sewing class appropriate for ages 14+. Be prepared to experiment with color, shapes, and lines. Please bring clothing that you would like to mend, fix, or spruce up. Scrap fabric will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. Small scraps and old clothing scraps welcome! Material cost includes your very own mending kit (valued at $25), and a selection of sashiko thread and bobbins to use during class.

Watercolor Studio with Ginny Joyner

During these 14 sessions (35 hours!), Ginny will supervise this studio style class and help you master your watercolor techniques! Improve your color palette and brush techniques as you work on more challenging class projects as well as your own projects. Each 2.5 hour session will take place in the visual art space at CVU. This course is designed for artists who have taken watercolor classes previously and are comfortable working independently. Some guided instruction and supervision will be available as you progress throughout this course. Watercolor 2 continues your foundational skill-building in mixing colors, layering washes, and design composition. If you have some knowledge of watercolor, but want to "brush" up on you skills then this 10 session (20 hour) course is for you! Ginny will use guided photos and content for this class. If you would prefer to use your own projects, that is possible as well, or you can join Watercolor Studio on Wed evenings. All ages and levels welcome! Quality materials are important in watercolor and we can supply you with brushes to keep and a reasonable amount of paint and paper. Welding Fabrication Open Studio
ARTS & CRAFTS
Welding Open Studio is designed for those with prior welding experience that would like use of the CVU Metal Shop to work on projects independently and with supervision. Participants may bring in their projects and use the welding facilities during the allotted timeframe. Projects will need to be carried in and out of class as there is no storage available. There will be a brief overview of the CVU safety guidelines at the beginning of the course. Each class will be supervised with one of our welding instructors who will also be available for hands help. Safety Requirements: Completion of the Access Introduction to Welding Through Fabrication course is required OR prior knowledge and practice of welding basics has been verified. Students must always wear safety toe leather boots, cotton pants and long sleeved cotton shirts. Turtlenecks are recommended for shirt type. All apparel should not have any holes or frays. Welding PPE such as safety glasses, ear plugs, and welders caps. Students can purchase welding PPE locally at either Haun Welding Supply or Airgas, which are both in Williston, VT Minimum age requirement: 16+

Find your strength, balance, and calm. Join Jane for an accessible, fun, energizing yoga flow that builds strength, develops balance, and brings students out of their daily grind and into their true nature of goodness. We’ll get the heart rate up with vigor and then wind down, relax, and release tension in a class designed to make you feel better than when you came in the door. Each class features a unique, relatable theme based on insights from the yoga tradition. You’ll feel better physically and enjoy a calming theme you can contemplate and enjoy all week. Suitable for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. Participants should be comfortable sitting on and getting up from the floor. Bring your mat and water bottle, as well as blocks and strap if needed. We will have some yoga mats and blocks available to borrow.

Zentangle Tree Ornament

Let's create original, exquisite tree and Christmas ornaments! Using the Zentangle method, wooden cutouts, and sharpies, we will make some beautiful art pieces. The zentangle method is a trademarked process based on a theory developed by founders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. “ZEN” means calm and “TANGLE” means a collection of overlapping patterns. ZENTANGLE is the bringing together of the calm and the pattern. Creating Zentangles is also great for improving your fine motor skills and concentration! In this class you will be introduced to a bunch of "tangles" and you will choose the ones you prefer to put on your prepped wooden ornaments. The fee includes 2-prepared ornaments with ribbons. Previous Zentangle experience is not required. All materials are included in the fee. Min age: 14+

Zumba with Dillon!

Zumba takes the "work" out of workout by bringing a dance party to your fitness routine. High and low-intensity calorie-burning moves that focus on cardio, muscle toning and balance will be a focus. Expect a blend of Latin, hip-hop and African rhythms that guarantee tons of fun. Stylistic and fitness variations make this class accessible for participants of all abilities and ages. No dance experience is necessary, just your enthusiasm! See you on the dance floor! Bring a water bottle and small towel, and wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
