    Empty Bowl Pottery Course- Volunteers

    Calling all experienced potters! This is an opportunity for individuals who have previous wheel experience and feel relatively comfortable throwing or hand-building bowl forms. We welcome you to come to the CVU Pottery Studio and develop your skills while supporting a great cause. During this course, you will create and finish a collection of 15-20+ bowls depending on your proficiency. All the bowls will be donated to the Empty Bowls* Fundraiser. This is a great opportunity for additional throwing time, to connect with other potters, and to uplift our community! *Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement, led by artists and craftspeople, in cities and towns around the world to raise money for food related charities and to bring awareness about food insecurity within local communities.     In this introduction to watercolor painting, this is a 10 session (20 hours) will promise to give you the skills required to enjoy watercolor as your new loved hobby! Learn the foundations of this versatile and creative medium: Design layouts, color palettes, composition, texture, and light will all be covered. Ginny Joyner, a professional watercolor illustrator, leads everyone through exercises designed to explore the many techniques associated with watercolor. No previous art experience required. Open to all ages and levels! Quality materials are important in watercolor and are included in the fee, valued at $75. Kits will be available the first day of class. This class will meet inside CVU.     Mixed Level Wheel Throwing Tuesdays with Ryan Strobel- 12 weeks!

    If you are just beginning your wheel throwing journey, or if you have some experience, but want to learn more while you work independently, then join us for Mixed Level Wheel Throwing with veteran potter of 20 years, and high school ceramics teacher, Ryan Strobel. During these 12 weeks you will discover the art of pottery wheel throwing in this engaging mixed-level class, perfect for beginners and experienced potters alike. Learn essential techniques, refine your skills, and create unique ceramic pieces under the guidance of an expert instructor in a supportive, creative, and judgement-free environment. Only 10 spots available! Students will each receive a 25lb bag of stoneware-mid-fire clay, Cone 6. All clay, glazes (brushed and dipped), use of the studio, tools, as well as firing costs are included in the fee. NOTE: Only studio glazes and clay will be allowed.     With 35 hours of instruction and 14 sessions, Ginny will supervise this studio style class and help you master your watercolor techniques! Improve your color palette and brush techniques as you work on more challenging class projects as well as your own projects. Each 2.5 hour session will take place in the visual art space at CVU. This course is designed for artists who have taken watercolor classes previously and are comfortable working independently. Some guided instruction and supervision will be available as you progress throughout this course. This is also great class to connect, gather and learn from other watercolor enthusiasts within our artistic community! Please bring your own watercolor paint, brushes, and paper to class.     Open Lathe Workshop -Bowl Turning with Eddie!

    This is an open studio style, 10-session workshop, designed for those that have some bowl turning experience and feel comfortable in a woodworking shop and using a lathe. With a small class size of 6, this allows each student to work on their own lathe while Eddie supervises and helps guide novice wood bowl turners. Blanks will be available to purchase ($10 each- cash), or BYO wood blanks. Want to buy your own gouge? Contact us for recommendations. Wear closed toed shoes, hat (hair tied back), and bring your own protective eye wear/goggles. No loose clothing or accessories! "Eddie and this class was just the bowl-turning experience I was looking for. I’d had some prior turning instruction and time on the lathe, but with Eddie I was able to work semi-independently, make my own errors, ask for advice and really progress.   • Oil Painting Studio for Intermediate to Advanced Painters!

    Calling all oil painting enthusiasts! This class is a wonderful opportunity for those artists with experience in oil painting who would like to advance their skills as well as enjoy the weekly camaraderie of fellow artists with a keen interest in oil painting. Led by artist, Emily Moore, this 8-week course will elevate your painting skills and color knowledge. The beginning of the first three classes, I will start with a brief presentation of the following topics: Week 1: Color (we will never stop talking about color!) Week 2: Contrast of temperature, value, & size. Week 3: Mark-making & Edges. Weeks 4- 8: As you paint, Emily will walk through the class answering questions and/or giving advice. The last 40 minutes of class we will be a group discussion and observation about each individual piece. “What is working ? What is not working?” Students, please bring your own painting materials together with photos, objects, or ideas of what you want to explore in paint. A comprehensive suggested materials list will be provided at the time of registration. Table top easels are available for use during class. (Note: Only odorless solvents are allowed in the CVU building such as Terpenoid or Gamsol) Recommended age: 18+ This class will take place inside CVU. Please check in at the front entrance of CVU on your first day of class.
  • Learn to Knit a Cable Hat

    Are you ready for a new challenge in your knitting journey? How about a cable hat? A handmade knitted hat can be a great gift, or keep it for yourself! Techniques taught in this class: Learn to read a charted cable pattern Learn to knit cables with and without a cable needle! Techniques practiced in class: Casting On and Knitting in the Round Knitting, Purling, and Ribbing Knitting Cables Reading a Chart Decreasing for the Crown If you’ve done a bit of knitting before, this class is just the thing to take you through the next steps in your journey! Required Materials: Worsted Weight Yarn- Adult Size Large needs at least 200 yards. Krista recommends a solid or tonal light to medium dark color yarn in order to see the cables. Must Love Yarn in Shelburne: Berroco Vintage, Berroco Ultra Wool, and Malabrigo Rios Joann Fabrics: Patons of North America: Classic Wool Worsted; K + C: Knit and Crochet Essential Wool Northeast Fibers in Williston: Cascade 220 Needles- You will need two sizes of 16” circular Needles: Size US 6/ 4.0 mm and US 7/ 4.5 mm. The smaller needles are for the ribbing. The larger needles are for the body of the hat. You will need double-pointed needles (DPNs) in size 7 to decrease the crown of the head. Metal needles with sharp points are best. Chiagoo is Krista’s preferred brand of knitting needles. Other Tools: Cable needle, or double pointed needle for holding live cable stitches. Darning needle.     Watercolor 2 continues your foundational skill-building in mixing colors, layering washes, and design composition. If you have some knowledge of watercolor, but want to "brush" up on you skills then this 10 session (20 hour) course is for you! Ginny will use guided photos and content for this class. If you would prefer to use your own projects, that is possible as well, or you can join Watercolor Studio on Wed evenings. All ages and levels welcome! Quality materials are important in watercolor and we can supply you with brushes to keep and a reasonable amount of paint and paper. If you need a supply kit (valued at $75), please choose the option, "Including Supply Kit," when registering. This class will meet inside CVU.   • Stained Glass for Beginners with Charlotte Sylvester

    We are excited to introduce Stained Glass this year as a new course offering at the ACCESS program! Charlotte Sylvester has been practicing stained glass since 2020 and is looking forward to guiding you through the process from start to finish. During this 5-session course, students will learn the fundamentals of the Copper Foil Method, and create one stained glass suncatcher, approx 6"x 8", to cherish or gift. Choose an entry level "cartoon" or template in the shape of a Sun, Hummingbird, or Lotus Flower, and learn the nuances of glass cutting, shaping, grinding and soldering with copper foil. Please join us in this exciting adventure as we discover the beauty of stained glass! This class is for beginners or intermediate levels, age requirement: 18+. All materials and tools are provided for use during this course. Please note that this class is NOT recommended for those that are pregnant or breastfeeding due to the possible exposure of lead solder. Requirement: Closed-toed shoes and Pants. Safety glasses will be provided, or feel free to bring your own. Limited spots available!
  • Sew Your First Sampler Quilt

    In this class you'll learn to make your own quilts from start to finish! We'll learn the basics required for designing, cutting, and piecing your first quilt blocks, assembling them into a quilt top, and tying and binding it into a finished sampler quilt! Ideal for people with some familiarity with a sewing machine, but no experience is required! The basics learned in this class are easily applicable to any larger scale quilt project, and is an ideal jumping off point for those looking to get into quilting! Sewing machines and quilting tools will be provided. You are also welcome to bring your own sewing machine. Please plan to bring the following to class: ~3 yards total of various woven fabrics. Any fabric store (Joann Fabrics in South Burlington is a convenient option) will have a large selection of "quilting cottons", and these are perfect. You can select your own from the bolts of fabric available in the store, or select a collection of pre cut "fat quarters," sometimes sold in coordinated sets like this example which are perfect for this kind of project. ("Jelly Rolls" or "Fabric Rolls" are collections of precut fabric strips, and these are not ideal for the kind of quilting you'll be learning in this class; stay away from these.) IMPORTANT NOTE: One of your pieces of fabric will have to be at least 36"x36;" this will be used for the backing of the quilt. You will need to select a bolt of fabric to get this cut from at the store. Most fabric stores do not sell pre cut pieces of this size. 1 Large Spool (>500yd) 30-60wt Cotton Thread. Thread will be visible in some places, choose a coordinating (or contrasting!) color with your fabric if you would like!
  • Botanical Cuff Bracelet

    Join fine local jewelry maker, Jolynn Santiago, and learn how to make a beautiful piece of jewelry to wear of gift. Participants will design a cuff bracelet inspired by shapes and patterns found in nature. Students will imprint metal with steel tools and hammers to create unique and organic textures. Then, we will use a jeweler’s saw to pierce the metal. Finally, students will form their cuff to fit their wrist using a specialized hammer and anvil.     Introduction to Welding Fabrication I

    This technical hands-on course is designed for those with no welding experience, as well as those who want to improve their skills and learn how to weld using proper methods. The course will cover welding of carbon steel using Oxy-Acetylene torches, SMAW (arc or stick welding), GMAW (MIG or wirefeed welding) and GTAW (TIG welding). Welding of stainless steel and aluminum can be covered as students progress in their abilities. Oxy-Fuel cutting and plasma cutting will also be introduced during the course. There will be the option to weld a small project of your own during the class. All equipment and consumable materials are included in the fee. Recommendations and Requirements: Students must always wear safety toe leather boots, cotton pants and long sleeved cotton shirts. Turtlenecks are recommended for shirt type. All apparel should not have any holes or frays. Students should consider purchasing their own PPE prior to class, such as safety glasses, ear plugs, and welders caps. Students can purchase welding PPE locally at either Haun Welding Supply or Airgas, which are both in Williston, VT. Mention you are a taking an Access class for 10% off! The shop has welding PPE to borrow, but it may not fit properly and is used a fair amount by all students. Minimum age requirement: 16+ "The welding class was terrific, and the instructor Wes was truly passionate about his craft. I went into the session knowing nothing, and walked out five courses later having learned four different welding styles, and I even completed a couple of projects on my own.   • Beaded Earring Making for All Levels

    Join us to learn how to make two featured earring designs – one using wire and one utilizing chain. Participants are welcome to bring their own beads, though plenty will be provided along with the wire, earring hooks, and chain. The goal will not be to create earrings that exactly match those in the photos, but to learn transferable jewelry-making techniques. This will also allow participants to use beads better suited to their tastes. Those who complete the two pairs before the class’s conclusion will have extra materials to practice their methods and make more pairs. This class is one in a series on making jewelry with wire, chain, and beads. If you have a set of flat nose/chain nose, round-nose (super fine preferred), and cutting pliers, please bring them to class. Or we will have them available to borrow.
  • Fused Glass Coasters

    Come learn about fused glass and make a pair of coasters while you’re at it. This workshop will include instruction on using hand tools to cut the glass, using a grinder to get the shape you want and how to make crushed glass (frit) to create your design. Micaela will take your finished product after the class and fire them in a glass kiln; they will be available for pick-up at CVU a week later. All materials are included in class fee. No experience required. For students ages 13 and older. Students aged 8-12 are welcome; they should register with an adult who is also registered for the class, and plan to have one dedicated adult for each child attending. This class will meet inside CVU.
  • Oil Painting for Beginners

    In this 6- session intro to oil painting course we will explore the many techniques of working with this beautiful medium to create landscapes. Perfect for the novice just getting into Oil Painting, we will go over the fundamentals of Oils from the perspective of a landscape painter and focus on simple graphic shapes while having fun building dynamic beautiful scenes. We will go over shape language, value, color, and mixing color. The main thrust of the class is to get you to have fun and develop an appreciation for the medium of Oil Paint while learning to think graphically. Bring a landscape photo or picture to the first class. A list of materials to purchase prior to class will be provided after registration.   • Carving in Wood - A Comfort Bird

    Join long time master carver and woodworker, Bob Lindemann, as he teaches the principals of safely carving wood, using the tools correctly and efficiently, while creating objects to display or use. Participants will start with a blank and leave with a beautiful comfort bird. These birds are a handheld gift usually given as an act of kindness or as a comforting token of love. Option to mount the small bird on a stand with feet and gift one for every friend and family member! High quality carving knives and chisels available for everyone to use in class. Option to purchase the tools during registration, or after the class for $40. This class will meet inside CVU.
  • Learn How to Turn a Wooden Bowl!

    Join Andrew Duling, a professional wood turner, to make your first hardwood bowl! Each participant will receive a hardwood blank and have their own lathe to use during class. Learn how to use and work safely on a lathe. Turn a blank into a beautiful wooden bowl and gain the confidence needed to start a new hobby! Safety practices, proper tool use, and properties of wood will be covered. All materials and use of equipment included in the fee. Bring safety eye goggles and wear closed toed shoes. No loose clothing! Wear your hair tied back or wear a hat. Appropriate for high-school aged students and older.     Celebrate St Pat's with Folding O' the Green (dollar bill). Need some formal wear? Try a dollar bill bow tie! Instead of giving a gift card, how about bills folded into a shirt and pants. Need to keep some kids amused? Fold up some green jumping frogs! Bring at least 7 crisp dollar bills. This class is open to all experience levels, including beginners. For students aged 13 and older. Younger students are welcome to join with a caregiver who is also registered.
  • Textured Silver Ring Band

    Join fine local jewelry maker, Jolynn Santiago, and learn how to make a beautiful piece of jewelry to wear of gift. Rings can be fabricated using wire and sheet. In this class, students will be using sterling a silver sheet to make a ring band that is 4mm or wider. First, we will use hammers and other tools to create interesting and unique textures. Once the band is textured, we’ll being designing and shaping the ring band. Then, we will saw and pierce the ring using a jeweler’s saw. Finally, students will anneal (soften), form, solder, shape, patina, and polish the rings. Depending on the complexity of the project, students may have the opportunity to make a silver ring out of wire as well! All materials, silver, and tools for use during class are included in the fee.   • Crafting an End Table from Repurposed Pallets

    Join us for an exciting new course led by woodworker Tony Hashem! This hands-on, two-session workshop offers a unique opportunity to craft a beautifully designed end table with shelves using repurposed pallets and a variety of fine woods. Under Tony’s guidance, you’ll create a timeless, visually stunning piece that can be cherished for years to come. Students will have the chance to select from a wide range of new and repurposed woods, including maple, oak, poplar, and pine, to personalize their project. For added customization, you’re welcome to bring your own wood for the table’s top shelf, while the structure and remaining shelves will be crafted from durable pine. The finished table will measure approximately 18" x 10" x 30", but students can adjust the dimensions within reason to ensure a perfect fit for their space. This course is designed for those with some prior experience using power tools, particularly power saws, as the process will involve measuring, cutting, gluing, drilling, and clamping. All materials and tools are provided, so you can focus on honing your skills and creating a functional, one-of-a-kind piece. Don’t miss this chance to learn from a seasoned craftsman and take home a handmade treasure! Spaces are limited, so reserve your spot today!   • Needle-Felted Shamrock

    Learn the art of needle felting and create a lucky charm in honor of St. Patrick's Day! We'll use metal cookie cutters, a special barbed needle, and a foam block to create a wool shamrock sculpture without using water. You can turn your finished piece into a keychain or hang it from a backpack, a car rearview mirror, or wherever you like! Needles, wool roving, cookie cutters, and other felting materials will be provided. No experience necessary. Ages 12 and up. Students aged 8-11 are welcome with a caregiver who should also register for the class.
  • Intro to Beaded Necklaces & Bracelets

    Join us to learn foundational techniques in making wire, chain, and beaded necklaces and bracelets. Participants will learn how to secure clasps and jump rings to wire using crimp beads, make necklaces using a mix of chain and beads, stylistically space out bead clusters on a wire using crimp beads, and connect several necklaces (or bracelets) to make two- or three-strand necklaces (or bracelets). Participants are welcome to bring their own beads, though ample will be provided along with the beading wire, bending wire, and chain. The goal will not be to create necklaces that exactly match those in the photos, but to learn transferable jewelry-making techniques. This will also allow participants to use beads better suited to their taste. This class is one in a series on making jewelry with wire, chain, and beads.
