If you have always admired the classics, then you will know that learning to draw the human figure is essential for any artist. This 5-session class is intended as an introduction to figurative art for beginners and others lacking confidence in their abilities to capture a realistic image of the human body. During this course, you will be using pencil and charcoal as the preferred medium to draw the human form. At each class, there will be a professional, scantily dressed model as the subject and the principles life drawing will be covered. From how to measure and draw proportions, angles and shapes, negative and positive space, shading, light, and other forms that will bring the human form to life will be addressed.
Each session will build on the prior sessions and will include breaks for the model and the artist.
Session 1: The Tools. The Model. The Why. Initial Marks.
Session 2: The Four Phases Mark, Measure, Compare, Adjust.
Session 3: Look and Understand.
Session 4: Measurement. Mistakes to Avoid.
Session 5: Canons to Know and Ignore. Light, Shadow and Form. What’s Next?
All materials will be provided and are included in the fee.
Min age 18+.
Although Rodney draws and paints in the classic realist tradition, he didn’t come to this until approaching retirement. He grew up in a loving working class family on the south bank of the River Tyne in Gateshead on the North East coast of England. He was the first in his family to go to college or even finish high school, and after graduating with a degree in Zoology he started a career in the Information Technology industry. After attending college near his hometown he left to work in the English Midlands and then Bermuda where he met his American wife. Rodney moved to the Boston area to start his life with her where they raised a family and finished their corporate careers early. As he approached retirement he began to focus on his art and took his first formal art classes from Jason Polins, a classically trained Oil Painter working in Somerville, MA. Rodney and his wife Sarah moved to Vermont in the fall of 2017, and he can usually be found painting at the Studio Collective at 416 Pine Street in Burlington, VT.
