There are many ways singers can benefit from improvising, such as expanding their range and sound qualities, gaining confidence in their singing and discovering their musical creativity. In this class we will explore vocal improvisation through a variety of methods including Circle-Singing (developed by Bobby McFerrin and his collaborators) where we create songs in the moment using melodic patterns, percussive sounds, harmonies, and more, ‘Vocal River’ exercises developed by Rhiannon which include sound with movement, call and response, and many more solo as well as ensemble practices. (Jody recognizes how vulnerable we can feel trying new things as a singer. This will be a very supportive environment where you will listen and connect with each other musically.)
You will learn new musical vocabulary, take risks, and have fun playing with your voice!

This class will meet inside CVU.
Jody has been singing in a variety of contexts all of her life—from singing with her family, to church choir, an a cappella group, a punk band, as a singer/songwriter and now she primarily performs as a jazz and blues singer. She has performed many times at the Discover Jazz Festival, First Night Burlington, and in public and private venues throughout Vermont. She’s also appeared as a guest artist on Vermont Public Radio and Television, singing jazz and her own compositions. In 2013 she recorded her first CD from a live performance at FlynnSpace in Burlington. It is available through CDBaby. Through workshops at Omega Institute and in Montreal Jody has studied improvisation and Circlesinging with Bobby McFerrin and Rhiannon. These experiences inspired her to offer Circlesinging in her own community and she has since led sings in Hinesburg and Burlington.
