Sew Your First Sampler Quilt

ARTS & CRAFTS -
Winter/Spring 2025

In this class you'll learn to make your own quilts from start to finish! We'll learn the basics required for designing, cutting, and piecing your first quilt blocks, assembling them into a quilt top, and tying and binding it into a finished sampler quilt!

Ideal for people with some familiarity with a sewing machine, but no experience is required! The basics learned in this class are easily applicable to any larger scale quilt project, and is an ideal jumping off point for those looking to get into quilting!

Sewing machines and quilting tools will be provided. You are also welcome to bring your own sewing machine.

Please plan to bring the following to class:

  • ~3 yards total of various woven fabrics. Any fabric store (Joann Fabrics in South Burlington is a convenient option) will have a large selection of "quilting cottons", and these are perfect. You can select your own from the bolts of fabric available in the store, or select a collection of pre cut "fat quarters," sometimes sold in coordinated sets like this example which are perfect for this kind of project. ("Jelly Rolls" or "Fabric Rolls" are collections of precut fabric strips, and these are not ideal for the kind of quilting you'll be learning in this class; stay away from these.)
    • IMPORTANT NOTE: One of your pieces of fabric will have to be at least 36"x36;" this will be used for the backing of the quilt. You will need to select a bolt of fabric to get this cut from at the store. Most fabric stores do not sell pre cut pieces of this size.
  • 1 Large Spool (>500yd) 30-60wt Cotton Thread. Thread will be visible in some places, choose a coordinating (or contrasting!) color with your fabric if you would like!

Eric Couture is a queer, interdisciplinary designer and textile artist hailing from the far northern reaches of Vermont. They are particularly interested in the memory of materials and how textiles can be used as recordkeeping devices. With a deep focus on the making process, Eric creates objects meant to be used, loved, destroyed, and mended. In 2024, Eric graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts with a BFA in Graphic Design, with a minor in Craft/Material Studies during which they specialized in textiles and wood. They have taught classes in the command-line interface, quilting, screenprinting, and visible mending at VCUArts (Richmond, VA), Studio Two Three (Richmond, VA) and Berea College Student Craft (Berea, KY) where they were also the Student Craft Fellow in the Weaving Studio.
