How to Start Sewing: Foundations of Garment Sewing
If you are interested in learning the basics of clothing construction and would like to create a wearable garment then this course is for you!In this 6-week course, students will learn essential garment sewing techniques while constructing the digital Itch to Stitch Simien Pattern Top and Dress. Using How to Start Sewing as a foundational guide, students will build skills in pattern reading, fabric selection, seam finishes, fitting adjustments, hemming, and garment construction. By the end of the course, each student will complete a beautiful handmade top or dress—and gain the confidence to sew garments independently.Throughout the course, we will explore: Reading and understanding patterns and pattern markings Selecting appropriate fabrics Accurate cutting and marking Seam construction and finishing Inserting sleeves Neckline finishing techniques Hemming and professional pressing Basic fitting adjustments We will use How to Start Sewing as a companion guide to reinforce core sewing principles and best practices. This course is ideal for confident beginners who are comfortable using a sewing machine and are ready to complete their first garment—or refine their foundational skills.Students will leave with a finished top or dress and the knowledge to confidently tackle future garment projects.Materials and supplies: A list of materials and supplies will be emailed to you after registration. Requirement: Comfortable using and operating a sewing machine. All students will have use of a sewing machine in our sewing lab. A brief tutorial will be provided on the first day of class. Age 16+.

Acrylic for All Levels
In this 4- session course we will cover acrylic painting techniques using different subjects each week. The purpose of class is to have fun and learn something new using acrylic as the medium. We will explore a variety of techniques and approaches that focus on how to make dynamic vibrant imagery using acrylic paint. We will use the best practices for exploring a new technique each week as well as how to paint off of an under-drawing. No experience necessary, and open to all levels.You will learn how to use a variegated/graded wash to learn how to work with the stay-wet method while painting on watercolor paper. You will also learn how to apply acrylic using the wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry methods. We will also cover the stifling technique to learn how to dapple in light using warm and cool colors on canvas. Lastly, we will use our learned techniques to layer interesting and fun imagery and shadowing.A list of materials to purchase prior to class will be provided after registration. Minimum age: 16+

French for Tourists with Julie Lambre (In-person)

Join Julie Lambre, a California native and graduate of Defense Language Institute, San Jose State and Trinity College (DC) as she helps you learn the French language using situational vocabulary and phrases so that you can confidently converse in French on your next trip. While French is spoken in many countries throughout the world, the main focus will be on the cultural aspects of France. During the 90-min sessions, the focus of the course will be on practical communication, cultural understanding and situational vocabulary. While not necessary, some knowledge of French will be helpful prior to taking this course. Please purchase the following texts (Amazon or your local bookstore) prior to the start of the course. 1. Franco-Bibliophile Book Club: Exploring France Through Literature
MUSIC & LANGUAGES
This six-week discussion-based book club explores French history, culture, and place through three acclaimed works of fiction set in pivotal moments of France’s past. Readings span the French Revolution, 19th-century Paris, and World War II–era France, offering insight into how literature reflects political upheaval, architectural grandeur, and everyday life. Through guided discussion and cultural context, participants will examine how setting shapes story and identity, from Revolutionary Paris to the Paris Opera House to occupied coastal France. An optional film screening will complement one of the readings. No prior knowledge of French language or history is required. *Sign-up for each session based on your interest and availability.
