  • Italian for Beginners- Part 1 - ONLINE

    "Ciao e Benvenuto!" I Imagine sitting on a small table in a piazza of a village in Italy. The waiter comes over and you converse in Italian. This course will give you the fundamentals of the Italian language as well as some useful phrases and ways to get around. This is an introductory course focused on the Italian language and culture where we will learn all about pronunciation, basic phrases, important vocabulary, beginning verb tenses and conjugations, and a sense of the everyday life and culture of Italy including food, wine, art, and how to get around this amazing country. This is a perfect course for those who want to begin learning a new language as well as for those who want to travel to Italy. There will be opportunities for speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Liz Winn taught for 30 years in the public school system with both music and classroom, and now continues to teach Italian. She once lived in Rome, and goes back about once a year to continue the immersion of the language and of the culture. Liz teaches to the needs/wants of her students. Expect to have a lot of fun while learning! This is an online class that will meet via Zoom or Google Meet. An invitation will be emailed prior to the start date, as well as handouts.

    This course is a continuation of the Access course, "Italian for Beginners," where we will go more in-depth with verb tenses and conjugations, further develop our speaking, reading, writing, grammar, & listening abilities, increase our vocabulary, and more! This course is perfect for those who wish to further develop their beginning Italian language skills and their understanding of the Italian way of life! Prerequisite is Italian for Beginners I or a basic foundation of Italian language. If you are unsure if this class is right for you, please contact us as we will connect you with the instructor.   • Kriya Yoga with Lish

    Kriya Yoga, as taught by Lish, is a fun, not too serious approach to yoga. Each 90-minute session is excellent for joint mobility and tones the digestive, nervous, immune, and endocrine systems. Experienced yogis, beginners and the not so flexible are all welcome at this beneficial practice. Bring a yoga mat, water, and something to sit on.     Late Spring Medicinal Plant Walk

    Spring is the perfect season to start identifying and harvesting the medicinal herbs in your neighborhood, as you can track their progress and catch them at different stages of growth. We'll take a slow stroll through the CVU meadows and wooded edges, meeting common and helpful plants and diving into their uses and the best times to harvest for medicine. Get ready to use all your senses, and leave with a better sense of the green world around you. Bring waterproof walking shoes and notetaking materials! Sign up for both of Sophie's spring plant walks to further deepen your knowledge of medicinal plant ID and use. This class will meet inside CVU to start and then move outside. Please dress appropriately for the weather, as the class will take place outside CVU and may involve walking over some muddy and uneven ground. In the case of extreme weather, this class will meet a week from the scheduled date.
  • Learn How to Turn a Wooden Bowl!

    Join Andrew Duling, a professional wood turner, to make your first hardwood bowl! Each participant will receive a hardwood blank and have their own lathe to use during class. Learn how to use and work safely on a lathe. Turn a blank into a beautiful wooden bowl and gain the confidence needed to start a new hobby! Safety practices, proper tool use, and properties of wood will be covered. All materials and use of equipment included in the fee. Bring safety eye goggles and wear closed toed shoes.   • Let's Draw Faces!

    You may think that drawing people is the most difficult of any type of drawing but… it isn’t. Drawing faces is not as hard as you think! There are many proportions that almost every face adheres to and it’s just a matter of learning how to measure and apply them within the structure of each individual face. For example, did you know that everyone’s eyes are more or less one eye width apart? And when a face is in profile, the ear is much farther back on the head than you think! Using photographs in this fun and engaging class, students will learn to truly see and believe their eyes and experience the satisfaction of catching a likeness of a person. Students will have the opportunity to draw a portrait of someone of their own choosing. All supplies will be provided. All levels of drawing ability are welcome. This class will take place inside CVU.
  • Mantras & Mala Bead Necklace Making

    Learn how to make your own mala bead necklace with gemstones, lava, rudraksha and wooden beads. Mala bead necklaces have 108 beads and a tassel and are used to count mantras when meditating. When not being used as a tool, these necklaces symbolize our intent and presence through the power of their gemstones. These are beautiful creations, and perfect to wear all year around, or give as a very special gift. Laura Neal of Malas & Mandalas will teach you about the different properties of gemstones as well as discuss mantras to use with your Mala necklace.   • Modern Adirondack Chair Workshop

    Adirondack chairs are the perfect Vermont styled chair for your porch, fire pit or lawn. There are many different styles of Adirondack chairs, but in this course you will be making an (unfinished) modern and simplified version that will become your favorite summer seat! You may choose to leave your chair unfinished or you can paint, stain, or seal the wood at home. Methods and recommended products will be discussed. During this one day workshop, students will cut all the necessary wood components, assemble and sand their chair. Chairs are constructed from 2X4 and 2x10 boards and held together with construction grade screws. These chairs are heavy and durable! (If a student is not comfortable or not permitted to use the saw, I can pre-cut all their components with advanced notice). Minimum age for this class is 16+. Please bring PPE equipment such as safety goggles and gloves. Dust masks are optional. Bring a measuring tape and wear closed toed shoes, hat and tie hair back.

  • Oil Painting for Intermediate to Advanced Painters!

    Calling all oil painting enthusiasts! This class is a wonderful opportunity for those artists with experience in oil painting who would like to advance their skills as well as enjoy the weekly camaraderie of fellow artists with a keen interest in oil painting. Led by artist, Emily Moore, this 8-week course will elevate your painting skills and color knowledge. The beginning of the first three classes, I will start with a brief presentation of the following topics: Week 1: Color (we will never stop talking about color!) Week 2: Contrast of temperature, value, & size. Week 3: Mark-making & Edges. Weeks 4- 8: As you paint, Emily will walk through the class answering questions and/or giving advice. The last 40 minutes of class we will be a group discussion and observation about each individual piece. “What is working ? What is not working?” Students, please bring your own painting materials together with photos, objects, or ideas of what you want to explore in paint. A comprehensive suggested materials list will be provided at the time of registration. Table top easels are available for use during class.     Open Lathe Workshop -Bowl Turning with Eddie!

    This 10-session class is designed for people that have taken at least one bowl turning class and feel comfortable in a woodworking shop and using a lathe. Small class size allows you to work independently with a lathe just for you! Eddie will supervise and is able to guide novice wood bowl turners. Blanks will be available to purchase ($10 each), or BYO wood blanks. Want to buy your own gouge? Contact us for recommendations. Wear closed toed shoes, hat (hair tied back), and bring your own protective eye wear/goggles. No loose clothing or accessories.

    Grab a friend, tap into your inner Monet! Using acrylic paints, create a waterlily scene on an 11x14 canvas while enjoying pop/seltzer during this fun and relaxing Paint and Pop event at CVU! Acrylic painting techniques will be covered as well as a bit of color theory while sipping on your favorite beverage and making some new friends. All materials are included in the fee. Seltzer and soda will be available, or bring your own non-alcoholic beverage of choice. No previous painting or art experience necessary. All levels welcomed! Minimum age: 12+

    Positive Dog Training

    This class is for any level. Learn how to teach your dog positively! There is no need for leash corrections. Understand how to reward your dog with your voice, praise, food, and by providing positive feedback. Learn proper body-mechanics and leash-techniques so you can control your dog but still keep the leash loose -- which allows for more off-leash control! Get your dog to look at you, turn with you, walk better on leash, sit from the front and the side, stand-up, lie down and to settle, and the principles of wait and stay. This is an outdoor class, so you will be teaching your dog how to behave in public and during distractions. If you have any questions about whether this class would be a good fit for your dog, please contact us and we will put you in touch with Alana. The first class is for people only and will be indoors. Subsequent classes will meet outside with your dog. Please bring a 6-foot flat nylon/fabric leash (ideally 3/4-inch) and flat collar or body-harness required (front-connection harnesses preferred), as well as poop bags, treats and water. This class is for dogs 3 months of age and over. Puppies must have received their second distemper vaccination to participate. Dogs 6 months and older must have received a rabies vaccination. Note: The fee covers up to 2 handlers per dog. In the case of bad weather, class will be held on Thursday instead of Wednesday. This class will meet outside on the CVU grounds, except for the first class which will meet inside. Please check-in at the CVU main entrance before the start of class.

    Have you always wanted to try your hand at the pottery wheel? Come get your hands dirty with us in this 12-week, beginner and judgement-free class. Jessica LaBonte, owner of Cedar Tree Pottery, will teach you the techniques on how to make the two basic forms- the bowl and the cylinder, and then try our hand at basic glazing and decorating techniques. Students will each receive one 25lb bag of white low fire clay, access to all stocked glazes, tools to use during class, and weekly instruction. All materials and firing costs are included in the fee. Only 10 spots available! Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to get messy!

    Pottery Wheel for Intermediate/Advanced- 12 weeks!

    This class is for people who have had any type of previous experience on the pottery wheel and would like to learn more. Jessica LaBonte, owner of Cedar Tree Pottery, will start by reviewing the cylinder and bowl form, then we will refine our techniques by paying attention to weight, functionality, and consistency. More advanced forms will be covered upon student request. Students will each receive one 25lb bag of low fire white clay, access to stocked glazes, use of tools during class, and weekly instruction during this 12-session ceramics course. BONUS: Access to "Open Studio" will be on Monday evenings 5-8pm (Feb 12-May 6) and is on a first come basis.     Pottery with Supervision- 12 weeks, PLUS Open Studio!

    This class is open to those who have taken pottery at Access before or whom have an in-depth understanding of pottery and would like a guaranteed time, space, and supplies to work independently on their wheel or slab projects. A supervisor will be available for questions, to help organize the studio, communicate requests, and help with firing schedules, etc. Students are encouraged to continue learning new methods, learning from each other, and expanding their independent practice. *We regret that we cannot offer the space or materials for production of quantity pieces. Only clay and glazes from our studio will be allowed due to the possibility of cross contamination and potential firing issues. If you have a specific glaze you would like to use, prior approval will be required. A wide assortment of low-fire glazes, 1 block (25lbs) of low-fire white clay, and firing costs are all included in the fee. Firing schedule will be at the discretion of the supervisor and CVU ceramics teachers. BONUS: Access to "Open Studio" will be on Monday evenings 5-8pm (Feb 12-May 20) and is on a first come basis.     Slow Flow Afternoon Yoga with Ellen

    This yoga class moves slowly and with intention so that the student can focus on being in the present moment. The integration of breath while holding poses for longer periods of time allows students the option to go deeper in a pose or find more softness. Suitable for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. Bring your mat and water bottle, as well as blocks and strap (towel), if available. We will have some yoga mats & blocks available to borrow. This class will meet inside CVU.

    Join Dunia Partilo, a Vermont licensed educator and native from Spain, and learn one of the most widely spoken world languages useful in business and travel. This 10-session course focuses on conversational skills through dialogues, vocabulary and typical expressions that are very useful in order speak the basics of the Spanish language. Each class will also follow the text, "Language Hacking: A Conversation Course for Beginners, Spanish", By Benny Lewis. Please purchase the textbook, "Language Hacking: A Conversation Course for Beginners, Spanish," by Benny Lewis prior to the start of the first class as this will be used throughout the course. Additional materials and handouts will be used during class. This class will start online and transition to in-person. Classes in Feb/March will be online. Classes in April and May will be in-person at CVU.

    If you are planning to travel to any Spanish speaking country in the future, and you need to boost your Spanish skills this class is for you! Dunia Partilo, native Spanish teacher, invites you to continue learning Spanish through practicing more complex grammar and vocabulary. If you have some Spanish knowledge or have taken Beginners Spanish, this class is for you! In this 10-session course, students will need to purchase prior to the start of class, the practice workbook, Practical Spanish Grammar from Marcial Prado. Dunia will assign additional fun activities, and you will learn interesting cultural facts as well as engage in discussions and conversation as the course progresses.   • Spirit Traffic – Share Your Stories of Adventure

    Everyone has a story. Come and share your story of adventure! Join author C. Jane Taylor in an evening of storytelling. Jane will kick off the event with a short reading from Spirit Traffic, her new adventure memoir (published by Magic Hill Press) about learning to ride a motorcycle at age 50 and embarking on a life-changing, seven-week, 10,000-mile motorcycle trip with her husband and son. After her reading, participants will be invited to share their own stories on the theme “Adventure as I see it.” Each story should illustrate a lesson learned and be limited to five-minutes. Please prepare your personal story ahead of time. Spirit Traffic has been featured in several national magazines, on podcasts, and on Vermont Public. The book was also the subject of a national book tour— by motorcycle—during the summer of 2022. Included in the class fee if a copy of Jane's book, Spirit Traffic, valued at $18.
