    American Sign Language (ASL) for Beginners Level 1

    Are you motivated to learn SIGN language? ASL is the visual gestural language used by the Deaf community. It has its own unique grammar, sentence structure, and facial expressions. This class is for anyone that is new to ASL or looking for a refresher. Don is part of the deaf community and promises this immersive class will be fun and filled with plenty of conversation as well as practical exercises. In the first class, we will have an interpreter to help communicate the class syllabus. In these 10 sessions, you will learn about Deaf culture and how to communicate with basic introductions, numbers, alphabets, colors, food, people, places, restaurants, geography, etc. Handouts and videos will also be introduced weekly to help reinforce your newly learned skills. Some homework will be assigned to help you progress with ease. Recommended minimum age: High School This class will meet inside CVU.

    American Sign Language (ASL) for Beginners Level 2

    If you have taken the ACCESS ASL for Beginners Level 1 course and want to continue to build a deeper understanding of deaf culture and language then this next level is for you! You will learn to form sentences, increase your vocabulary, and there will be an emphasis on more conversation during class. Your instructor, Don, is of the deaf community and promotes the technique of immersion as the best method of learning ASL.     Beekeeping Basics

    Have you thought about keeping bees? This is the opportunity to learn more about these vital and fascinating creatures providing so much of our food. The instructors, or apiarists, have over 60 years of combined experience and will pass along not only the facts, but also tips from hands-on experience in the field and many years in the beekeeping business! Learn more about your bee passion from Vermont based beekeeping experts at this popular Access class. These three sessions will enlighten, and maybe even inspire you to start a few hives of your own! Plenty of question-and-answer time and all the info needed to start your own operation. A "possible" 4th field session may be offered. Date, time, and location to be determined based on weather. A course book valued at $10 is included in the price. This class meets inside CVU.
  • Bridge for Beginners: Club Series OR Diamond Series

    Based on your knowledge of bridge, please choose either Club (beginners) series or Diamonds (some knowledge) series. Based on interest, we will run only one of these series. You will be notified one week prior to the start of class. Club Series: No knowledge of bridge is needed in this bridge class which features a "hands-on" teaching approach with students learning the game by doing exercises with actual cards at the table. Learn the basic bidding system and card playing skills to build on with continued practice. *The Club course comes with a great book to guide you at home and is yours to keep! Diamond Series: Join Phil for this follow-up class for beginners, Diamonds. If you have taken Club before or have some knowledge of bridge, then this class is for you!     Digital Photography Bootcamp

    Got a digital camera and need a refresher on how to optimize photos using the different functions? In this 4-session course, we will review digital camera functions and how to use them, visual-design and framing considerations, as well as explore some Adobe Photoshop editing skills to bring your photos to life. We will take our camera outside, weather permitting, for a technical and visual exploration around the CVU campus. During registration you will have the opportunity to tell us what you are interested in specifically learning so the instructor can tailor the class to your level and interests. Emphasis will be on each individual student's interests. For novice through intermediate-level photographers. This class will meet at CVU in the Photography Classroom Lab. Each student will have use of a computer loaded with Adobe Photoshop software.
  • East Coast Swing Dancing for Beginners Continued...

    David Allan has been teaching swing dance for over 15 years! He has taught at Middlebury and St Michael's colleges, the Waldorf schools and many townhalls throughout VT. You will learn the fundamentals of leading and following which include correct body posturing, connection and foot work. This class is a continuation of the Access class, East Coast Swing Dancing for Beginners or for those that need a refresher! Both couples and individuals are welcome! We will be regularly rotating among all class members for a better dancing experience. Couples will have a chance to practice together towards the end of each class. During registration, you will be asked if you prefer to Lead, Follow, or no-preference. To create a balanced class we may ask partners to be flexible. Please wear any flat sole shoe. A leather sole or tennis shoes are good options. No experience necessary, ages high school and older are welcomed! This class will meet inside CVU.

    Eritrean/Ethiopian Injera

    Injera is unique staple food to Ethiopia & Eritrea best known for spongy sourdough flatbread. It's a mixture of Teff (nutrient-dense & gluten-free), barley, corn & self-rising flour. Learn to mix the dough in class and carefully observe batter as it readies to be baked. Everyone will take a turn making injera and then take home a dinner prepared by Alganesh to enjoy. One meat and two vegetarian dishes will be served. This class will take place inside CVU.
  • Fused Glass Wind Chime

    Come to this workshop to learn how to make your own set of wind chimes (or sun catchers) out of glass. The wind chimes can be hung outside in a protected spot, inside on a houseplant or in a window. Your finished product will be tack fired after class in a glass kiln and available for pick-up at CVU a week later. All materials are included in class fee. No experience required. For students ages 13 and older. Students aged 8-12 are welcome; they should register with an adult who is also registered for the class, and plan to have one dedicated adult for each child attending. This class will meet inside CVU.

    Gentle Evening Yoga with Ellen

    This gentle yoga class is a meditative, fluid, and soothing class suitable for all levels. Students will experience slow movements to warm the body and release stress and muscular tension, breathing techniques to support the nervous system, and simple postures to help build strength and stability. Suitable for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. Bring your mat and water bottle, as well as blocks and strap (towel) if needed. We will have some yoga mats and blocks available to borrow. This class will meet inside CVU.

    Getting to Know Your Car Workshop

    Do you have any idea how to check if the oil is low, change a tire, add basic fluids when needed? Want to be informed about what to know when buying a used car? Join the techs from Girlington Garage, girlingtongarage.com, for a quick, down and dirty look at the basics of car care. Get to know the basic layout of your car under the hood, Vermont State Inspection requirements, how to avoid getting taken advantage of at the repair shop, or anything else concerning cars that you would like to know. This class will meet outside CVU.

    The “Two-Handled Lading Round” Harvest Basket is a sturdy, two-handled basket built to carry everything from clothes to crops. With a tightly woven and dense double-bottom, the “Two-Handled Lading Round” is certain to be a useful and robust basket for daily use. All high-quality materials are be responsibly sourced and included in the fee. This is a three-session course, Ben will lead you through the class with patience and instruction as you craft your very own unique and beautiful basket.   • Italian for Beginners- Part 1 - ONLINE

    "Ciao e Benvenuto!" I Imagine sitting on a small table in a piazza of a village in Italy. The waiter comes over and you converse in Italian. This course will give you the fundamentals of the Italian language as well as some useful phrases and ways to get around. This is an introductory course focused on the Italian language and culture where we will learn all about pronunciation, basic phrases, important vocabulary, beginning verb tenses and conjugations, and a sense of the everyday life and culture of Italy including food, wine, art, and how to get around this amazing country. This is a perfect course for those who want to begin learning a new language as well as for those who want to travel to Italy. There will be opportunities for speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Liz Winn taught for 30 years in the public school system with both music and classroom, and now continues to teach Italian. She once lived in Rome, and goes back about once a year to continue the immersion of the language and of the culture. Liz teaches to the needs/wants of her students. Expect to have a lot of fun while learning! This is an online class that will meet via Zoom or Google Meet. An invitation will be emailed prior to the start date, as well as handouts.

Prerequisite is Italian for Beginners I or a basic foundation of Italian language. If you are unsure if this class is right for you, please contact us as we will connect you with the instructor.   • Kriya Yoga with Lish

    Kriya Yoga, as taught by Lish, is a fun, not too serious approach to yoga. Each 90-minute session is excellent for joint mobility and tones the digestive, nervous, immune, and endocrine systems. Experienced yogis, beginners and the not so flexible are all welcome at this beneficial practice. Bring a yoga mat, water, and something to sit on.     Late Spring Medicinal Plant Walk

    Spring is the perfect season to start identifying and harvesting the medicinal herbs in your neighborhood, as you can track their progress and catch them at different stages of growth. We'll take a slow stroll through the CVU meadows and wooded edges, meeting common and helpful plants and diving into their uses and the best times to harvest for medicine. Get ready to use all your senses, and leave with a better sense of the green world around you. Bring waterproof walking shoes and notetaking materials! Sign up for both of Sophie's spring plant walks to further deepen your knowledge of medicinal plant ID and use. This class will meet inside CVU to start and then move outside. Please dress appropriately for the weather, as the class will take place outside CVU and may involve walking over some muddy and uneven ground. In the case of extreme weather, this class will meet a week from the scheduled date.
  • Learn How to Turn a Wooden Bowl!

    Join Andrew Duling, a professional wood turner, to make your first hardwood bowl! Each participant will receive a hardwood blank and have their own lathe to use during class. Learn how to use and work safely on a lathe. Turn a blank into a beautiful wooden bowl and gain the confidence needed to start a new hobby! Safety practices, proper tool use, and properties of wood will be covered. All materials and use of equipment included in the fee. Bring safety eye goggles and wear closed toed shoes.   • Let's Draw Faces!

    You may think that drawing people is the most difficult of any type of drawing but… it isn’t. Drawing faces is not as hard as you think! There are many proportions that almost every face adheres to and it’s just a matter of learning how to measure and apply them within the structure of each individual face. For example, did you know that everyone’s eyes are more or less one eye width apart? And when a face is in profile, the ear is much farther back on the head than you think! Using photographs in this fun and engaging class, students will learn to truly see and believe their eyes and experience the satisfaction of catching a likeness of a person. Students will have the opportunity to draw a portrait of someone of their own choosing. All supplies will be provided. All levels of drawing ability are welcome. This class will take place inside CVU.
  • Oil Painting for Intermediate to Advanced Painters!

    Calling all oil painting enthusiasts! This class is a wonderful opportunity for those artists with experience in oil painting who would like to advance their skills as well as enjoy the weekly camaraderie of fellow artists with a keen interest in oil painting. Led by artist, Emily Moore, this 8-week course will elevate your painting skills and color knowledge. The beginning of the first three classes, I will start with a brief presentation of the following topics: Week 1: Color (we will never stop talking about color!) Week 2: Contrast of temperature, value, & size. Week 3: Mark-making & Edges. Weeks 4- 8: As you paint, Emily will walk through the class answering questions and/or giving advice. The last 40 minutes of class we will be a group discussion and observation about each individual piece. “What is working ? What is not working?” Students, please bring your own painting materials together with photos, objects, or ideas of what you want to explore in paint. A comprehensive suggested materials list will be provided at the time of registration. Table top easels are available for use during class. (Note: Only odorless solvents are allowed in the CVU building such as Terpenoid or Gamsol) Recommended age: 18+ This class will take place inside CVU.     Positive Dog Training

    This class is for any level. Learn how to teach your dog positively! There is no need for leash corrections. Understand how to reward your dog with your voice, praise, food, and by providing positive feedback. Learn proper body-mechanics and leash-techniques so you can control your dog but still keep the leash loose -- which allows for more off-leash control! Get your dog to look at you, turn with you, walk better on leash, sit from the front and the side, stand-up, lie down and to settle, and the principles of wait and stay. This is an outdoor class, so you will be teaching your dog how to behave in public and during distractions. If you have any questions about whether this class would be a good fit for your dog, please contact us and we will put you in touch with Alana. The first class is for people only and will be indoors. Subsequent classes will meet outside with your dog. Please bring a 6-foot flat nylon/fabric leash (ideally 3/4-inch) and flat collar or body-harness required (front-connection harnesses preferred), as well as poop bags, treats and water. This class is for dogs 3 months of age and over. Puppies must have received their second distemper vaccination to participate. Dogs 6 months and older must have received a rabies vaccination. Note: The fee covers up to 2 handlers per dog. In the case of bad weather, class will be held on Thursday instead of Wednesday. This class will meet outside on the CVU grounds, except for the first class which will meet inside. Please check-in at the CVU main entrance before the start of class.

    Pottery Wheel for Intermediate/Advanced- 12 weeks!

    This class is for people who have had any type of previous experience on the pottery wheel and would like to learn more. Jessica LaBonte, owner of Cedar Tree Pottery, will start by reviewing the cylinder and bowl form, then we will refine our techniques by paying attention to weight, functionality, and consistency. More advanced forms will be covered upon student request. Students will each receive one 25lb bag of low fire white clay, access to stocked glazes, use of tools during class, and weekly instruction during this 12-session ceramics course. BONUS: Access to "Open Studio" will be on Monday evenings 5-8pm (Feb 12-May 6) and is on a first come basis. Note: NO open studio on Feb 26, April 8, and April 22 All materials and firing costs are included in the fee. Only 10 spots available! Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to get messy!
