Oil Painting for Intermediate to Advanced Painters!

FINE ARTS, CRAFTS, FIBER, WOOD, & PHOTOGRAPHY -
Winter/Spring 2024

Calling all oil painting enthusiasts!  This class is a wonderful opportunity for those artists with experience in oil painting who would like to advance their skills as well as enjoy the weekly camaraderie of fellow artists with a keen interest in oil painting.  Led by artist, Emily Moore, this 8-week course will elevate your painting skills and color knowledge.

The beginning of the first three classes, I will start with a brief presentation of the following topics:

  • Week 1: Color (we will never stop talking about color!)
  • Week 2: Contrast of temperature, value, & size.
  • Week 3: Mark-making & Edges.
  • Weeks 4- 8: As you paint, Emily will walk through the class answering questions and/or giving advice.

The last 40 minutes of class we will be a group discussion and observation about each individual piece. “What is working ? What is not working?”

Students, please bring your own painting materials together with photos, objects, or ideas of what you want to explore in paint.  A comprehensive suggested materials list will be provided at the time of registration.  Table top easels are available for use during class.

(Note:  Only odorless solvents are allowed in the CVU building such as Terpenoid or Gamsol)

Recommended age:  18+

This class will take place inside CVU. Please check in at the front entrance of CVU on your first day of class.

Emily Moore

In 1986, as an employee at the University of New Hampshire, I used my “tuition

benefit” to take Drawing I. I had wanted to learn to paint for a long time, and for me learning to draw was the first step. I took 6 other courses at UNH in drawing, watercolor, and oil painting over five years. After that, I took classes and workshops with different teachers as opportunities came my way and fit around family and work. Many years later I designed a studio that was built next to our house. A dedicated space. It really enabled me to immerse myself in the work, once I got there. In one stretch for more than a year, I went to the Open-to-the-Public Drawing Session at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, one evening a week to join about 25 other artists in drawing from a live model. The next morning, at breakfast in the hostel I stayed in, I did tiny drawings of the faces of people way across the dining area before going to my oil painting class nearby ... and then back on the bus to NH and the rest of my world. I now live in Burlington and have a small studio here in E-1 Studios, behind Speeder and Earls on Pine Street. Visitors Welcome — when the OPEN flag is flying.
