  • Trauma Sensitive Yoga

“The body is an important source of wisdom” -TCTSY Ways of Being. Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an empirically validated adjunctive clinical treatment for complex trauma. This embodied, anti-oppressive approach to healing supports recovery through movement, present moment experience, and choice. TCTSY is rooted in understandings of trauma theory, attachment theory, neuroscience, and hatha yoga. It can be used with people of all ages, and is accessible to and inclusive of all intersecting identities, body types, and abilities. No previous yoga experience is needed. Throughout the TCTSY practice, participants are invited through intentional language cues to explore guided movements and to make choices about how they would like to engage and move (or not move) their bodies in the moment. Participants are offered opportunities to notice sensations in their bodies, and are invited to make choices for movement and breath based on their own felt internal experiences. Without the use of physical assists, participants can meet themselves where they are at, and be in charge of their bodies through movement, choice, and present moment experience. TCTSY aims to support the healing process through offering opportunities to build internal awareness, sense of self, a sense of reconnection and safety with the body, and empowerment to make choices, which are often compromised as a result of trauma. TCTSY is a unique and effective treatment through its emphasis on invitational language, choice making, non-coercion, interoception, and shared authentic experience.
