Knit Your First Sweater

FINE ARTS, CRAFTS, FIBER, WOOD, & PHOTOGRAPHY -
Winter/Spring 2024

Have you knit hats, scarves, mittens and cowls and want to take on a sweater? In this class we’ll cover the techniques required for knitting a top-down, raglan sweater. We’ll be working in bulky weight yarn so it will be a fairly quick knit, in just a month’s time, you’ll have your very first sweater to knit! There is a bit of homework before the beginning of class, please knit a swatch, approximately 6” x 6” using your larger gauge (US 11) needles and working in stockinette stitch – cast on 20 stitches and work one row knit and one row purl – repeat until your swatch is approximately 6” square. Bring your swatch to the first day of class and we’ll get measured up and cast on!

Note: If you would prefer to knit a child sized sweater (as small as infant), let us know and we will put you in touch with Kelly to get the appropriate pattern and material (yarn) requirements.

Advanced Beginner Class – You should be comfortable casting on, knitting & purling.

Materials:

Yarn: Yarn will be dependent on the size sweater you will want to knit. The following sizes are available in the pattern, please measure your bust and add 2-4” to that measurement depending on how loosely you would like the sweater to fit. Sizes (34, 38, 42, 46){50, 54, 58, 62}, you will need approximately (540, 600, 650, 700){750, 810, 870, 980} yards of bulky weight yarn. There is lots of variation in bulky weight yarn, look for one that will get you approximately 3 stitches to the inch on US 11 needles. Good options include Tahki Superwash Merino Bulky, Berroco Lanas Quick, Lion Brand Hue & Me. We can work with most bulky yarns, however we may have to adjust needle size or pattern size to account for your individual gauge.

Needles: US 10 16” & 32” circular & double points, US 11 16” & 32” circular and double points (Note: if you are comfortable using the Magic Loop method of knitting, you don’t need to bring dpns, you can use your 32” circulars)

Notions: Stitch Markers, Darning Needle, Tape Measure, Scissors, Scrap Yarn
