In this Portraiture and Figurative Painting class students will learn the Rielly Method of figure painting. We will be going over the Rielly Palette which is a graded palette used for making flesh tones and examine best practices for drawing the human figure from life and from imagination through a review of the basic shape relationships that make up the parts of the human body and mimicry of master artists including but not limited to John Singer Sargent.
During the first session, we will go over the Rielly Palette and touch on best practices for drawing the face. I will demo how to prepare a canvas for painting in addition to mixing a palette. We will review materials and the Form Phase of the painting as well as the Modeling Phase of the painting. From the Second Session going through to the end of the session students will be encouraged to attempt a master study of one of the old Master portrait paintings.
Note: This is an intermediate level painting class, and beginners are encouraged to check out the Access Intro To Oil Painting Class to gain a basic ease with the medium if they are new to Oil Painting.
Modification - If students are coming into the class with limited drawing skills but a great degree of comfort painting then students will have the option of doing a wildlife subject. Students will be encouraged to spend the second class - (our first class doing our chosen subjects) doing a black and white study of their animal and the remaining two sessions doing a final colored version. In this modification the paintings both sketch and final will be small to mid format.
This class welcomes students of all levels. A list of materials to purchase prior to class will be provided with your registration confirmation. General materials required for oil painting are included in the fee. Minimum age: High-School
This class will meet inside CVU.
